Dr. Jastifer is a West Michigan native who grew up in Lowell. He is excited to be back in Michigan and working in Kalamazoo. While not at work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their three sons.

Dr. James R. Jastifer M.D. is a fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon practicing in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He is very excited to be a part of the clinical faculty at the Western Michigan University School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Borgess Medical Center. He hopes to provide advanced and compassionate care to his patients, while contributing to the educational training of the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.

Focusing on foot and ankle reconstruction, he additionally specializes in the care of common foot and ankle conditions, such as arthritis of the foot and ankle, flatfeet, tendon disorders, bunions, and hammertoes. He takes emergency calls and is experienced in the treatment of orthopaedic trauma. He has published multiple peer reviewed articles and textbook chapters in the orthopaedic literature and actively teaches and collaborates with researchers at the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Western Michigan University. Dr. Jastifer is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.

Dr. Jastifer attended Michigan Technological University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biomedical Engineering, graduating summa cum laude. He then attended four years of medical school at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. After graduation, he spent the next five years completing his surgical internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at the Western Michigan University School of Medicine. During this time he received the resident leadership award which provided him the opportunity to join the American Orthopaedic Association Emerging Leaders Program. Dr. Jastifer then went on to complete an additional one year foot and ankle surgical fellowship under the direction of renown surgeon Dr. Michael Coughlin at the Saint Alphonsus Foot and Ankle Clinic in Boise, Idaho. His experience during his fellowship also included participation in surgery with Dr. Coughlin’s partners, Chris Hirose M.D. and Travis Kemp M.D.
